A3. Static Analysis of Plate Structures under Transverse Loading

A3.1. Rectangular Plate

Problem Description

A two dimensional square plate, subjected to vertical loading is examined (Figure A3.1.1).

Geometry, Properties and Loads

The plate of dimensions 5.00m x 5.00m has 20cm thickness. Material is concrete with

modulus of Elasticity E=29 GPa and Poisson Ratio ν=0.20. Three cases of loading and

boundary conditions are examined. According to the first one (Load Case 1), plate is

subjected to its self-weight (ε

c

=25.0kN/m

3

) plus 2kN/m

2

uniformly distributed load and its

boundary is fixed. In the second case (Load Case 2), plate is subjected to its self-weight

) plus 2kN/m

2

uniformly distributed load and its boundary is simply

supported. Finally, according to the third case (Load Case 3), plate is subjected to its self-

weight (ε

c

=25.0kN/m

3

) plus a concentrated load of 100kN applied at the middle point of the

plate, while all plate is elastically supported on ground with stiffness 5000kN/m
