A2.2. Plane Steel Frame

Problem Description

A one-story plane frame subjected to vertical or horizontal loading is examined (Figure

A2.2.1).

Geometry, Properties and Loads

The span opening is 7.0m and height of vertical members (columns) is 5.0m. The cross

sections of columns and horizontal members are IPE-450 and IPE-330, respectively.

Modulus of elasticity of the material is 210GPa and Poisson ratio is 0.30. Footing’s

dimensions are 150cmx150cmx50cm for each column and ground stiffness is 100kPa/cm.

Two cases of loading are studied. According to the first one, self-weight is taken into

account (ε

s

=78.5kN/m

) and horizontal member is subjected to distributed vertical load of

10kN/m (Load Case 1). In the second case, self weight is ignored and column AB is

subjected to a distributed horizontal load of 5kN/m (Load Case 2).
