B2.3. Square Plate with
Internal Supports
Problem Description
A two dimensional square plate with internal supports, subjected to vertical loading is
examined (Figure B2.3.1).
Geometry, Properties and Loads
The plate of overall dimensions 10.00m x 10.00m has 20cm thickness with four internal
supports. All boundary of the plate (externally and internally) are simply supported.
Material is reinforced concrete of modulus of elasticity 29GPa and Poisson ratio ν=0.20.
Τhe concrete strength class is C20/25 while the class of reinforcing steel is B500C. The
centre distance of the reinforcement from the plate edge is 20mm.
Τhe plate is subjected to its self-weight (ε
c
=25.0kN/m
3
), to a uniformly distributed
permanent load 2kN/m
2
and to a uniformly distributed variable load 5kN/m
2
.
Two One case of loading combinations are examined. In the first one (Comb1) the value of
the participation factor of all loads is equal to 1.0. In the second case (Comb2) the
participation factor of permanent loads is equal to 1.35 while the corresponding one of the
variable load is equal to 1.50.
For the analysis of the plates two cases are studied. According to the first one (Case1) the
system is analyzed using “Markus Tables” [9], which are usually applied in engineering
practice. In the second case (Case2), the system is analyzed using plate finite elements.
